Tightening vs Torque vs Tensioning: Simple Bolt Tightening Methods
Torque vs tensioning explained simply: how bolt tightening, torquing and tensioning differ, and which method gives a more reliable bolt load for your joint.
BOLTING EQUIPMENTS

Why does torquing vary? Most of the torque goes into overcoming friction, not stretching the bolt. We explain this in “Torque is Not Bolt Load”.
Tightening is the general word. Torquing and tensioning are two controlled ways of doing it. What really keeps a flange sealed is the clamp force in the bolt, called bolt load. The method you choose decides how well you control it.
Torque vs tensioning comes down to one question: are you twisting the nut, or pulling the bolt?

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between torquing and tensioning a bolt?
Torquing turns the nut with a measured twisting force, so the bolt load depends on friction. Tensioning pulls the stud straight with hydraulic force and then locks the nut, so the load is applied directly and is more uniform.
Is bolt tightening the same as torquing?
No. Tightening is the general word for making a bolted joint tight by any method. Torquing is one controlled way of tightening, using a measured twisting force.
When should I use bolt tensioning instead of torque?
Tensioning is chosen for large, critical joints where an even bolt load matters, such as heat exchanger and pressure vessel flanges, and when many bolts must be loaded together.
Why is torque not the same as bolt load?
Most of the torque is spent overcoming friction in the threads and under the nut, so the same torque can produce different bolt loads.
Torque wrench or Bolt tensioner?
Zeal India makes hydraulic and pneumatic torque wrenches and bolt tensioners. Share your bolt size, target load and application, and we will recommend the right method and equipment.
