Hydraulic Torque Wrench or Bolt Tensioner? Choosing the Right Tool for Flange Joints | Zeal India
Hydraulic torque wrench vs bolt tensioner? Compare accuracy, cost, speed for flange bolting in refineries, power plants and heat exchangers. Zeal India tool
BOLTING EQUIPMENTS
Why the right bolting method matters?
In refineries, power plants, petrochemical units and heat exchangers, one leaking flange can mean an unplanned shutdown, a safety incident and lost production. Most of the time the bolts were not the problem. The way they were tightened was.
Two tools dominate controlled bolting in Indian industry: the hydraulic torque wrench and the hydraulic bolt tensioner. Both beat hammer-and-spanner tightening. But they load a bolt in completely different ways, and the wrong choice costs time, money and joint reliability.

Habits that protect every bolted joint
When to choose which
Choose a hydraulic torque wrench when you maintain many bolt sizes, work on standard flanges or equipment mounts, have short stud protrusion, or need a versatile tool on a sensible budget.
Choose a hydraulic bolt tensioner when the joint is critical (high pressure, high temperature, hazardous media), the flange is large, such as a pressure vessel head, heat exchanger cover or turbine casing, uniform gasket loading matters, or you want to cut shutdown time by tensioning many bolts together.
Many plants use both: torque wrenches for everyday jobs, tensioners for critical joints.
Clean, well-lubricated threads also make the next shutdown easier. Zeal India's lubricants, cleaners and aerosol sprays are made for this kind of maintenance work.

Frequently asked questions
Is a bolt tensioner more accurate than a torque wrench?
In general, yes. A tensioner loads the stud directly, so the result depends far less on thread friction, the biggest source of variation in torque tightening.
Can a bolt tensioner be used on any flange?
Only where the stud has enough protruding length above the nut and there is clearance to fit the tool. Your supplier can check this against your flange and stud dimensions.
Do I need a different pump for each tool?
Both run on hydraulic pumps. The pump's pressure rating and flow should match the tool, so confirm compatibility before ordering.
Which is better for heat exchanger maintenance?
It depends on the joint. Large covers and channel heads often benefit from tensioning, while smaller flanges are routinely handled with torque wrenches. Many teams use both.
